JENNIFER Whitney currently leads the race to become mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council.

Counting is continuing and with postal votes still in the mail, the final result may not be known for up to ten days.

Mrs Whitney, a current councillor, leads incumbent mayor Mike Brunker by 296 primary votes.

Mrs Whitney leads the tally in divisions 1, 2 and 3 which include Airlie Beach and the islands, Cannonvale and Proserpine.

Mr Brunker currently tops the primary vote tally in divisions 4, 5 and 6 which mainly include Bowen and Collinsville.

A total of 10,233 votes were counted on Saturday night and there are a total of 18,721 people enrolled in the Whitsunday Regional Council area.

That means only about 55% of the votes have been counted so far.

It is expected that the preference votes will need to be included before a final result is known.

The totals for primary votes were as follows:

Jennifer Whitney - 3743

Mike Brunker - 3447

Grigor Taylor - 2033

Tony Maine - 944

UPDATE: The ECQ website has yet to be updated but mayoral candidate Jennifer Whitney confirmed tonight she has increased her lead by a further 90 votes.
