Whitsunday artists in hot demand at Bowen Show

THREE talented Whitsunday artists received the recognition they deserved at the annual Bowen Art Society Show, which wrapped up on Sunday with more than 180 entries.

The four day event showcased the work of some of North Queensland most skilled artists, with a number of entries coming from Victoria and South Australia.

Sharon Dewsbury won first prize in Section 2 for a painting depicting any marine subject, in any medium with her charcoal and watercolour drawing A Sailor's View.

Lisa Toohey won second prize for her charcoal drawing Life which depicted an image of the human form and Reika Kondo received a highly commended award in Section 3 for an artwork of any style in any medium 2D for her pastel piece Breaking the Silence.

Owner of Smart Arts Suzi Hancock was overjoyed at the results and jumped straight on the phone to congratulate her students.

"I think I get more excited about my students winning awards than I do about my own work," she said.

"It's very satisfying to teach them skills and see them deliver such great results."

Ms Dewsbury has been attending classes at Smart Arts for the past six months and can't believe what she has achieved.

"When I first saw Suzi complete a drawing I thought there was no way I would be able to do it but after one class I knew I could," she said.

"The most inspiring thing is that at the end of your first class you go home with a finished product."

Ms Hancock runs art classes from her new studio Smart Arts at the Cannonvale markets with more than 100 students. For information or to book a class, phone 4946 6705.
