Whitsunday FC kicks off for 2012
WHITSUNDAY FC players took to the field on Saturday for the first pre-season game of 2012. Publicity officer Annette Tween said the game was used as a grader for the senior sides although more players are still welcome to sign-up.
"We'll still take more players [and] the womens' side are also looking for a coach," Tween said.
The 2012 season officially starts on March 10 but Tween says the club's teams will try to fit in as many pre-season games as possible until that date.
"Games will be on Saturdays both at the home ground and various locations within the Mackay clubs," she said.
Training sessions are also held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.45-8.30pm at the Whitsunday Sports Park in Jubilee Pocket.
Tween said the club, which is involved in the Mackay zone, provides a great social platform for local players.
"It's a great social get-together opportunity. It's good if you're new to town. There's several relationships come out of this club - even marriages," she said.
"It's also about fitness. Our coaches will teach you new skills."
Premier mens' coach Anthony Nobilia agreed.
"If you've never played before you're still more than welcome. Life's too short not to learn a new skill," Nobilia said.
Seniors are open to both men and women aged 14 years and up.
"You [generally] don't get a lot of women who play soccer but we've been lucky enough to have a womens' side here in the Whitsundays for the last seven or eight years," Tween said. "Whilst they haven't [always] been winning, they're also far from the bottom of the ladder," she said.
