Whitsunday Gold gets top coffee gong

WHITSUNDAY Gold has added another feather to its cap in the form of a bronze award from the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.

A division of the Royal Agricultural Show Society, the Royal Fine Food Show is the most prestigious food show in the whole country.

The judges presiding over the Whitsunday Gold product came from the Australian Coffee Traders Association and manager at Whitsunday Gold, Ali Simpson, said to win a bronze award was "truly significant”.

"Particularity for our region in a category like coffee, because so few coffee beans are grown in Australia,” she said.

Ms Simpson said the bronze winning coffee was medium roast characterised by a sweet, mild and buttery flavour with a caramel after-taste. The judges when tasting the Whitsunday Gold medium roast were drinking it as a latte and the blend is one of the best sellers at the coffee plantation just outside Proserpine.

Comment from the judges stated the coffee had "a good sweetness (and was) a very pleasant coffee”.

Ms Simpson said the coffee's flavour was in its freshness.

Whitsunday Gold adds the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show award to another award won in 2012.

Whitsunday Gold is the only coffee grower in the region and because it attracts so many interstate visitors to the Whitsundays it is something for the whole region to be proud of.

"We truly do have an award winning coffee in the Whitsundays,” Ms Simpson said.
