Whitsunday models chosen for international modelling circuit

TWO Whitsunday models will be jetting to Mexico in less than three weeks, vying for a chance at the crown of one of the world's most exclusive modelling competitions.

The prestige behind Miss Swimsuit USA International is phenomenal, as 20,000 women around the globe enter various modelling competitions and beauty pageants in the hopes of scoring a spot.

Lara Zafir (formally known as Mitton) and Clare Nixon are certainly a sight to behold, and the bubbly blondes will be flying to the US next month to compete against 70 women from all over the world.

It's dubbed an 'experience of a lifetime" with more than $75,000 USD in cash, prizes and modelling contracts up for grabs.

It will be the first time competing for Miss Nixon, who said she was 'shocked' when she received an invitation.

"I was so surprised and excited because the likes of Lara go - it felt like an honour to be invited," she said.

Miss Nixon said the swimsuit competition was up there with the likes of Miss Universe or Miss USA.

The competition isn't Mrs Zafir's first rodeo, as she placed third runner-up in last year's event.

"I came really close last year, so I'm super keen to get back this year," she said.

Knowing what to expect this time round has certainly helped Mrs Zafir in preparing for the comp, and she has been kind enough to impart some words of wisdom to Miss Nixon.

"It's all about confidence," she said.

"We motivate each other, and we go for a run every Wednesday morning - it's our weekly date."

Bikinis in every style and colour will fill the women's suitcases, along with glamorous evening gowns.

Miss Nixon said there was so much more to the industry than what was on the surface.

"I understand a lot of people think its degrading towards women - some people think it can be old fashioned I suppose, but I think it's a way of meeting new people and getting yourself out there," she said.

Mrs Zafir said the friendships she had made were the most valuable items incurred through all her competitions.

Both women said the exposure and career prospects gained from just being entered in the competition were amazing.

With about 50 judges to impress over a week long competition, Mrs Zaffir said it was important to go in with an open mind, and at the end of it all she was looking forward to having an ice cream.

"I like ice cream way too much," she said.

Both girls would like to thank their sponsors, Nixon Plumbing and Whitsunday Tattooing for the support they continue to show towards both models.
