Whitsunday welcome to go from drab wall to fab mural

IT HAS been suggested, talked about and argued over for years, but the Airlie Crescent retaining wall will soon welcome visitors with style.

Construction on the entry statement is slated to begin next month, with the finished product to boast significant landscaping and a sign reading "Airlie Beach, Heart Of The Reef".

With the sign to be set on marine blue tiles, the background will be lit at night to welcome visitors at all times.

A collaboration between Whitsunday Regional Council and tourism body SKAL Whitsunday, Mayor Andrew Willcox said the entry statement would be a boon for Airlie Beach in more ways than one.

"We are very excited with the proposed entry statement that SKAL Whitsunday has designed and are confident it will add another dimension to the already vibrant Airlie Beach precinct," he said.

"Distinctive and attractive entry statements do more than just define a region or town, they can grow tourism, attract investment and even become a destination in their own right thanks to the power of social media."
