Whitsundays delivers $2.7b of tourism investments

TOURISM confidence is booming in Queensland and the Whitsunday region has a $2.7billion slice of the state's investment pie.

Of $13billion in tourism developments planned for Queensland over the next five years, projects worth $2.7billion are slated for the Whitsundays.

The Laguna Whitsundays resort upgrade contributes the most at $2billion, while developments at Lindeman, South Molle and Daydream islands make up the remaining $700million.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said more than 30 projects, from the Gold Coast to Cairns, had been approved and would create thousands of jobs and inject billions into the economy.

"These are exciting times for tourism," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"We need to be looking to the future and ensuring that we have the right infrastructure and experiences to meet the needs of the millions of tourists who are coming here now and the millions more we expect in the years to come."

Other projects in the state contributing to the $13billion worth of investments include the Queen's Wharf development in Brisbane, the Jewel development at Surfers Paradise, the Cairns Aquarium, and the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.

In the year ending September, 2016, 2.6million international visitors landed in Queensland, an increase of 17% on the previous year. Those visitors spent a total $5.2billion around the state.
