Why saying 'let's see the SSM legislation' is dumb
OVER the past week or so I've seen a lot of people write that they want to see the legislation the Coalition is proposing before they vote in the postal survey on same-sex marriage.
Here it is. At the moment Section 5 of the Marriage Act defines marriage as: "the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life."
That would be changed to read: "the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life."
While I haven't called Malcolm Turnbull's office to check I'm pretty sure they're not envisaging changing the Act to define marriage as: "the union of a man, or a woman, or possibly a goat or photo frame, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life."
