Wild Oats aiming for first place

AMONG the prestigious yachts at the 2010 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is the pair of Wild Oats vessels, X and XI.

The Wild Oats XI most famously known for its multiple wins in the annual Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race is skippered by Mark Richards and is racing in the Super Yacht division.

Keeping with the tradition of respected crews at this year's race week is Wild Oats X, skippered by yachtsmen Iain Murray in the IRC Grand Prix class.

Following day three of racing, Murray's crew were currently sitting in third place and believes standings leader LOKI will be hard to beat.

“LOKI has had three wins in three races so they're looking particularly hard to beat,” he said following day two of racing.

“She's the form boat.”

But with an experienced crew on board Murray believes that his team is in with a chance.

“I think we can win realistically,” he said.

“We are doing well on handicap so we're in with a chance.”

After being part of several racing meets throughout his illustrious sailing career, Murray regards the annual Hamilton Island Race Week among the best in the world.

“It's as good a regatta as you find anywhere in the world,” he said.

“With the yachts, the weather, the conditions, the racing – the regatta is wonderful.”

Murray now hopes that his crew can perform well in the final races to claim first place in the prominent IRC Grand Prix division.
