ABOUT 50 emergency and community workers gathered at the Proserpine Mill Social Club last Wednesday afternoon for a thank you barbecue hosted by Wilmar Sugar.

Mackay Regional Asset Manager Danny Van der Berg said the informal get-together was organised to recognise people from the emergency services, community groups and North Queensland businesses who had helped victims of Cyclone Debbie get back on their feet.

"There was a strong feeling among Proserpine Mill employees that we should hold a barbecue to say thank you to all those people who assisted in the cyclone recovery effort," Mr Van der Berg said.

"We delivered hot cross buns and Easter eggs to about 700 energy workers last Monday morning, and followed this up with a sausage sizzle for all those other emergency workers who have been working so hard in the wake of the cyclone."

Members of the State Emergency Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Queensland Police Service and Whitsunday Quota Club were among those who attended Wednesday's sausage sizzle.

Soon after the sausage sizzle the bulk of emergency services personnel were stood down.

Wilmar Sugar assisted in the emergency response by providing a crane, man box and skilled staff for rescue and clean-up work.

The company also provided land adjoining Proserpine Mill for Ergon Energy to use as a truck depot and re-fuelling station.

Another parcel of Wilmar Sugar land has been made available to Whitsunday Shire Council to be used as a green waste recycling area during the clean-up.
