Wilmar crop tips 1.9 million tonnes

WHILE uncertainty reins about the future of the Trans Pacific Partnership and the potential loss of $13 million in sugar exports to the US if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with pre-election rhetoric, at home Wilmar has good news for the industry.

Wilmar Sugar's new crop estimates indicate the milling company will crush a total of 16.73 million tonnes of cane across its eight sugar mills this year.

This is 247,000 tonnes more than the August crop estimate and close to a million tonnes above the pre-season forecast.

The rain that has plagued this year's sugar cane harvest has also put more weight in north and central Queensland cane crops.

Cane supply and grower relations general manager Paul Giordani said the biggest increase had been in the Proserpine region, where the crop had been revised, up by 100,000 tonnes to 1.9 million tonnes since the previous estimate.

The Herbert region's new estimate is 4.68 million tonnes, 80,000 tonnes higher than the August forecast.

In the Burdekin, Wilmar now expects to crush a total of 8.75 million tonnes across its four mills, with the additional 47,000 tonnes coming from the north side of the Burdekin River.

The cane crop at Plane Creek Mill, Sarina, has been revised up by 20,000 tonnes to 1.4 million - the smallest increase of Wilmar Sugar's four milling regions.

Mr Giordani said the new estimates would not have a significant impact on season finish dates. "I'm optimistic we'll complete this year's crush by the end of December,” he said.

Wilmar is now at the 74% mark for the crush, with a total of 12.33 million tonnes of cane processed.
