Wish you were here Postcards to lure southerners north
JEALOUSY, it seems, could be a powerful tool to invigorate the Whitsundays' domestic tourist market this winter.
More than 88,000 postcards are about to be distributed via this newspaper and mass letterbox drops across the greater Whitsunday region by Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited as part of a "We Wish You Were Here" initiative.
WMDL is encouraging local residents to take the postcards and send them to their frozen friends and relatives in the south, reminding them just how good we have it up here in the beautiful, warm Whitsundays.
On receiving the postcards, all you have to do is plonk a personal message and address on the back and post it, or deliver them to one of three drop-off points in the region and WMDL will cover postage.
WMDL executive director Jeff Aquilina said the "We Wish You Were Here" initiative was a different approach to reaching the "Visiting Friends and Relatives," or VFR, market segment.
"We all know that when it comes to gorgeous winter weather, the Whitsundays region certainly has bragging rights," he said.
"Right now, WMDL is asking our local residents to help spread the word about our enviable 25-degree winter days to friends and family members in the southern states who are no doubt experiencing some chilly conditions.
Mr Aquilina said the region was now more accessible than ever for Melbourne and he also noted that the economic impact of the VFR market should not be underestimated.
"If 20,000 visitors stay five nights and spend just $100 per day in the region, that translates into $10 million injected into our local economy. We hope that our local residents will send these postcards far and wide and we hope to see many friends and family member in the region, soaking up our famous Whitsundays sunshine," he said.
Postcards can be dropped off at the WMDL office at 2623 Shute Harbour Road, Jubilee Pocket; the Whitsundays Region Information Centre at 192 Bruce Highway, Proserpine; or the Bowen Information Centre at 236 Bruce Highway, Bowen.
