Woman makes political statement with her quilt

AMONG the floral patterns and lace, one quilt on display at the Ekka featured dark colours and a strong political statement about the manufacturing industry.

Chris Harvey from Glass House Mountains made this particular quilt after she sat through a seminar and heard about the demise of Australian manufacturing.

She does not know anyone it has affected personally but the issue touched her.

The quilt that her friends have called "gloomy" features blocks of dark colours to give it a three-dimensional look and a map of Australia in the centre.

Ms Harvey has been quilting for eight years and this was her first "political statement" quilt. She says another might be in the works - maybe about refugees or terrorism.

She doesn't know how she'll go about it just yet; she says she'll probably wake up one morning and go "I know what I want to do".

The Australian manufacturing quilt was one of three Ms Harvey entered in this year's Ekka.

One of her other quilts won the hangers' choice prize chosen by the carpenters who put the quilt display together.

Ms Harvey admitted she thought this particular quilt, featuring Japanese fabrics and a block-style pattern was quite boring when she first made it so she jazzed it up with a diagonal slash, featuring red elements, through the entire quilt. She named this quilt slash.

To Ms Harvey, having the hangers' choice award for slash was like winning an Archibald.

Ms Harvey said she made her first quilt when her grandson was born and has kept up the hobby.

She said she loved the creativity, working with fabric and quilting in groups. - ARM NEWSDESK
