Women to help women with new support group
A NEW support group to help women through pregnancy, birth and the early stages of their child's life will be held at the Proserpine Community Centre on Thursday from 9am.
Proserpine Hospital midwife Shelley Lyne will be hosting the weekly support sessions that are open to all women in the community.
Ms Lyne has been a birth worker for the past 20 years and strongly believes in women supporting women.
"We live in such a transient area and many women move to the Whitsundays for work or as a result of their partner's work and don't have access to their usual support network," she said.
"I think it will be very empowering for women to learn from each others' experiences, to gain a better understanding of their bodies and to communicate openly in a safe environment."
She hopes the group will help dispel myths about the different techniques of child birth and help mother's make informed choices about their ongoing journey.
Ms Lyne will be arranging for different community members to feature as guest speakers during the sessions depending on the information the group requires.
"The sessions will evolve as the mother's require information and I have already been in contact with a local yoga instructor, baby massage therapist and lactation consultant who are willing to volunteer their time to assist the group," she said.
The first meet and greet session will be held next Thursday and will focus on birth support.
The sessions cost $10 per person and $5 for concession card holders to cover the cost of the room hire.
A nutritious morning tea will also be provided.
