Workers to relive history at annual mill reunion
A REUNION to celebrate the work of the Proserpine Mill's former employees, staff and directors will be held at the mill's social club on Friday, November 1.
The function will start at 11.30am, with an official welcome by Wilmar Proserpine site manager Danny Van Der Berg at midday.
Reunion organiser Ron Read said the idea for a reunion came about while sharing a few beers with friends at a local pub 16 years ago.
"We have had people come from as far south as the Sunshine Coast and as far north as Cairns with the smallest crowd being around 30 people, and at the biggest more than 70, so it's always a great event," he said.
Mr Read started as an apprentice fitter and turner at the Proserpine Mill in 1953, and retired as maintenance engineer in 2000.
He said during his time they would crush over two million tons of cane annually.
Local resident John McNamara worked at the mill as a boiler maker and workshop supervisor from 1960 to 2004.
He said the reunion was something to look forward to every year because so many men had dedicated their entire lives to working at the Proserpine Mill.
"It's just a great opportunity to reconnect, share a few stories and enjoy a drink with some old friends," he said.
A free barbeque lunch will be provided by Wilmar Proserpine and the bar will be open with a range of refreshments available for purchase.
