Yachtie's sudden death in Vanuatu
THE sudden death of former Mackay man, New-Zealand born Hanz Christian, outside a nightclub in Vanuatu has left his family devastated.
Mr Christian, who moved to Vanuatu 10 years ago, was tragically killed in Port Vila at the weekend.
It is believed Mr Christian, who was in his sixties, went to the aid of a woman who was involved in an altercation with a man outside Port Vila club Planet 107 before he was allegedly hit by the man and knocked to the ground.
It's understood he died in hospital soon afterwards.
The New Zealand Herald reported at the weekend that Vanuatu police said a 30-year-old local man had appeared in court, charged with intentional assault causing death.
His former partner Julie Christian, of Mackay, said Mr Christian had lived in Mackay for about 30 years until 1996.
"He loved the ocean and life," Ms Christian said.
"I would describe him as a bubbly person who loved playing the guitar.
"I always thought he could talk his way out of anything."
She said he'd always liked Mackay.
"He was coming back to Mackay to live actually," Ms Christian said.
"Hanz always said he'd come back to Mackay."
Mr Christian spent time working in and around the Mackay region.
"He used to work as a diver near Hay Point when that was first being built," Ms Christian said.
"He moved around a lot and Hanz even had a hydra-mulching business with his brother at one point.
"Rugby union was something that interested him as well.
"He played while he was in Mackay."
She said Mr Christian had loved to spend time relaxing on the water.
"We had a fishing boat for years," Ms Christian said.
"He was a yachtsman.
"We used to cruise the Whitsundays, and up and down the Queensland coast, of course."
Ms Christian said his death was all over the news in New Zealand.
"Some of the family are in Vanuatu today (yesterday) I think," she said.
"They hope to have his body back in New Zealand by the weekend for his burial.
"I'll travel to New Zealand for the funeral."
Mr Christian is survived by his four children, Farley, Chaise, Rhys and Kelsey.
"Our daughter Kelsey still lives in our house in Mackay," Ms Christian said.
She said if anyone in the Mackay region wanted to pass on their condolences to the family they could email her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
