Young science lovers unite

STUDENTS with a gift for science were acknowledged with a Science Day of Excellence at the Whitsunday Christian College last week.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) visited a select number of students from Years 3-6 and together practised drain stencilling, a rubbish audit and explored sustainable fishing practices.

The focus of this day was on our marine life and how to protect our animals in the Great Barrier Reef.

The authority identified with the students what makes the Great Barrier Reef so special and precious.

They created awareness through drain stencilling about where our rubbish goes and the impact it has on the environment.

Students invited to take part were selected based on their gifting and interest in the area of science.

Whitsunday Christian College administration officer Jodi Evans said the feedback was positive, and GBRMPA were definitely invited to come back again.

"Students really loved the activities and learnt a lot about the different animals living in the Great Barrier Reef and how we can do simple things to make sure that we are protecting them through our actions and not putting them in harm's way," she said.

Ms Evans said the school was passionate about protecting the reef, especially being located in the Whitsundays, and was looking at creating a more active partnership with GBRMPA's Reef Guardian program in the future.
