Youth Space puts on barbecue

PROSERPINE Youth Space is inviting locals to a sausage sizzle this Thursday.

Co-ordinator Donna Lawrence said the free barbecue was designed to engage local kids and to let the adjoining businesses of Youth Space know they were good neighbours.

The barbecue is called Neighbours Day and will be held at Youth Space behind Spanny's Real Estate from 12.30pm.

"We are tying to invite the older people in the community so they know what Youth Space is about,” Ms Lawrence said.

"It's a neighbour's day and Youth Space wants to be a good neighbour.”

Ms Lawrence said there would also be guest speakers at the barbecue.

Mike from Relationships Australia will give a talk and Hayden Kerr from MADEC will let kids know about their options if they are facing problems at home or school.

He will also outline how to access services if they are dealing with drug or alcohol problems.

Youth Space offers a referral facility but, more than that, it offers kids a place to go and gives them something to do.

The drop-in centre offers air hockey, a pool table, computers and internet.

"They can just drop right in and we try to made sure the kids are very welcoming to other kids,” Ms Lawrence said.

Youth Space is open from Tuesday to Friday from 12.30 -5.30pm.
