Anton Zafir went down in his UFC debut, falling to James Moontasri on TKO in round one.

Local MMA star Anton Zafir has fallen to opponent James Moontasri at this morning's UFC 193 welterweight fight at Etihad Stadium, Melbourne.

Zafir, who took on the fight at just eight days notice, started strongly against the German before visibly tiring late in the first round.

At the 4.36 minute mark of round one, Moontasri landed a vicious spinning back kick to Zafir's ribs, which felled the Whitsunday Martial Arts Club coach - ending the match on TKO.

Up until that point Zafir, a teacher at Proserpine State High School, was dominant, taking Moontasri to the ground and boasting the upper-hand of early exchanges.

After the fight Moontasri paid credit to Zafir for taking on the bout at such short notice.

Crowds packed Magnums and Capers in Airlie Beach to watch the fight.
